One World. One Passion.

So there’s no point in beating around the bush. I’m broke. I’m a full time student who marches both DCI and WGI. Right now, I am $1400 away from paying my tour fees for this summer. I am putting all of my money into this activity because I know that the memories I create and the lessons I take away from it cannot be learned anywhere else. Unfortunately, this activity needs members to contribute money so the organizations can pay for things like instruments, food, gas, etc. It ends up costing the members approximately $2650 for the whole summer.

I am asking that if you can, please help me and donate towards my tour fees. Even just a single dollar towards it will help immensely. I’ve already asked my family and they have told me they could not help me. Although my creativity does not stem far past music, if you do donate, please let me know. There was someone that said they would put a list of all the donor’s name on a piece of paper and take that paper with them on the field of each show. I plan on using this same idea. I am going to get a map and put a mark on it to represent where each donor is from. Next to their mark, I will put the name of the donor. I will not be putting the amount because the simple fact that you did donate is enough for me to know that you cared enough about me and this activity to donate to my cause.

Well, Impulse Drum & Bugle Corps, located in beautiful Southern California, have plenty of new openings for guard and horn players! Although experience is welcomed, it is not required. We have our first overnight camp this weekend, so contact me if you’re interested in joining this amazing drum corps! The corps is officially open to new members until our memorial day weekend camp.

And if you have not heard yet, we’ve extended our performances this year to include an out of state tour!

We are mostly in need of horns, but plenty of guard members wouldn’t hurt us either! The percussion section, as of now, is completely full. The wonderful staff at Impulse is willing to teach anyone how to play a new instrument as long as they have a desire to learn!

SUMMER RUNNING BLOCKS: I-vii-I-vi-V: I am so sick of people bashing other groups.

Coming from mandarins, this is completely relatable. Everyone works their ass off all summer long. I did know people that marched corps that placed lower than surf and still made fun of their show. I had the pleasure to talk to some members of surf at the Atlanta regional and they explained their show to me. I definitely had a better understanding of their show. I never looked down on them for trying something different. No matter where I go, I will always respect those, especially in the “lower” tier, corps because when you decide to march those places, you may know that you might not make finals but you still work your ass off everyday because you are still striving to perfect your show. That takes a lot to motivate yourself each day when the pay off is a lot less than a ring or a finals performance. That is the type of motivation you can’t learn from going straight to a top 12. And this is not to bag on those corps but to shed light on the corps that don’t receive the spotlight.

DCI/Madison Scouts Audition

So I didn’t get a callback for the Madison Scouts this year. I’m not really sure what I want to do right now. Honestly, I’m not a “video audition” type of person. I’m more of a “show up and show you what I can do and how much I can improve” type of guy. At this point, I’m still thinking about Mandies and I know they are a great organization. I’m thinking about keeping an ear to the ground for any cymbal holes or maybe even bari/euph holes. It is kinda sad because I believe if they had just let me come out there, I would have kicked some major ass because I can never really capture my potential in just a few seconds on a video camera.

If anybody knows of any holes for cymbals, I may be interested in filling them. If someone hears about a hole in the Scouts bari/euph line, I would probably be very interested in filling that position. For now, I guess I just play the waiting game and see what happens for this summer. At least I have my amazing Pulse family to march with this winter and I know that I’m really going to enjoy this winter season.

Scouts Audition

So I have my Madison Scouts audition in 30 minutes. Trying not to freak out so I got some juice it up. I’m just trying to think of it as just another practice session.

This is what drum corps is all about.
Why do we pay $1,000-$3,000 to do drum corps?
Do we get paid something in return? No.
Do we get trophies at each competition that we go to? No.

Then why do people do it?

We do it for the rewards of hearing the cheers and praise from the audience when we perform. For the adrenaline rush. For the experience of spending a summer with the greatest people and teaching staff. For the months that we spend outside rehearsing for up to 13 hours to perfect this 11 MINUTE SHOW, learning how to push ourselves past our limits and pushing others to get on the same level.
And yes we rehearse half naked, because hard work makes you hot and sweat. :P

There is nothing else like it, and this is why I march.

Madison Scouts. The only other place I would probably consider marching besides Mandarins. They may not have a cymbal line but I would play Euphonium again to be in their renowned hornline. I just love the vibe they give off and the brotherhood that they have their.

In 4 hours I will be on tour with the mandarins. I’m super excited to get on the road. In two days time. I will be in Texas. And in one month, I will be back home in my bed. It’s strange to think that I’ve waited so long for this and now that it’s here, it’s almost over. I know that this next month will be enjoyed and all the hard work I have put into this activity and still yet to be put in will be rewarded.

My last few minutes.

Just waiting for my ride. I can’t believe in a few minutes, I’m gonna be leaving my house for two and a half months! It’s pretty crazy. When I do finally get in the car though, I’m definitely gonna crash out cause I was up until 6am packing, cleaning my room, and doing non-important stuff because I felt like it needed to be done and i didn’t really feel like sleeping. :)

clinics fora possible cymbal line at my HS on tues and thurs. Cleaning the garage tues. Hanging with Van-Anh and then the rest of the mandarins cymbal line on wednesday. Family on thursday and celebrating my birthday (june 23) and leaving because I’m not gonna be back til August. Then camp and move ins on friday. I can’t believe it’s already here!!!!
